Police cracking down on liquor at Celebration of Light

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Vancouver Police are taking a page from grade school, as they’ll be phoning home if teens are caught drinking at the Honda Celebration of Light Festival.

The annual event brings hundreds of people to English Bay, including some looking for a party.

Vancouver Police Chief Jim Chu says it’s part of a larger drinking reduction strategy put in place by law enforcement across the Lower Mainland.

“For those young [under age] people that are drinking, not only should they expect a ticket, and what we did last year was phone parents and tell them their son or daughter is in illegal possession of liquor,” Chu explains.

He adds police will be spread across transit hubs searching people who may be bringing liquor to the festival. There will also be police boats in English Bay, police on horseback, and up in the sky in the police helicopter.

Drinking in public will get you a $230 ticket.
