VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Many people have been touched by the story of a two-year-old German Shepherd found badly injured in a dumpster in Kitsilano and later died.

More than a hundred people have commented on our story about the animal’s death last week.

Tonight, many people are expected to show up for a vigil in honour of Captain.

There has been a lot of talk about this event over the last few days over social media. The vigil is at 7 p.m. at Kitsilano Beach near the tennis courts. If you’re going, you are asked to bring candles and your own pet.

Marcie Moriarty with the BC SPCA isn’t surprised by the public’s outrage to a story she calls “tragic.”

“The closest I’ve seen, of course, was with respect to the sled dogs incident and I think people… [don't tolerate] this type of thing in our province,” she explains.

An online campaign has raised over $65,000 for the SPCA’s investigation.

“Unfortunately, we respond to 7,000 animal cruelty complaints each year. And the vast majority of course do not involved this type of brutal and intentional cruelty, but some do,” adds Moriarty.

Captain was found with serious cuts and bruises and died of a heart attack last week. Police are still looking for his owner.
