London hit by heatwave as Olympic Games approach

LONDON – As England prepares to host the 2012 Olympic Games, it is not the crowds, the security or even the traffic jams people are complaining the most about.

Fresh off the wettest spring on record, England is going through a heat wave after four straight days of sunshine and temperatures reaching 30 C.

The heat is melting Londoners like Sebastian, dressed in his business suit.

“I’ve got three bottles of empty water in my bag, I’m sweating. But hey, same as everyone else,” he said.

Some even say they miss the endless rain, cloudy skies and cool temperatures.

“That’s what us Brits like, put the coats back on, trousers, get back used to it. It’s good,” said one Londoner. “This is what it’s like on holiday. We’re not used to it in London.”

Gail from Montreal, who is in London to catch some of the Olympic, said all this sun and heat has been a pleasant surprise.

“All we’d heard all summer long was pouring rain and more rain than they had ever received. We arrive and it is gorgeous,” she said.

Her husband agreed.

“This is no humidity. I’d take this all summer long. It’s great!”

Rain is in the forecast for the opening ceremonies which take place on Friday.
