VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The most commonly used word in the English language has remained the same since the 1520s.

Over 5.2-million books from five centuries have been analyzed and, perhaps not too surprisingly, the word “the” continues to be the most often-used.

Phrases and terminology have changed dramatically over the years, becoming less religious and more American.

According to the Slovenian study, top four-word phrases in 1575 included “the word of God” and “baptized in his name.”

By contrast, in 2008, popular phrases were “at the same time” and “at the end of,” which signals a shift in how publishing has evolved.
