Richmond kids raise their own Olympic flag

RICHMOND (NEWS1130) – Summer camp kids staged their Olympic procession at the Richmond Oval today as the London Summer Games kick off, with dozens of kids marching to a flagpole out front.

The campers paraded in their own walk of nations, bearing country flags they coloured, Canada, Japan and the UK among them.

A few kids helped hoist the five-ringed Olympic flag, and among them, Isabella Shooter, who was a little unsure of it all. “It’s kind of weird, because it’s kind of embarrassing being in front of all these people.”

Victoria Wu was one of a few kids who got to help hoist the 5-ringed Olympic flag. “We made flags and banners, and we practiced putting up the flag, the Olympic oval flag.”

The youngsters had some help from camp programmer Kristina Macdonald.

“This year we have several wheelchair rugby athletes who we sent off to the Games, as well as the women’s soccer team has been training out of our facility.”

The oval now features volleyball and basketball courts and a smaller ice rink.
