Saborio a royal pain as Real Salt Lake edge Whitecaps FC 2-1

SALT LAKE CITY, UT (NEWS1130) – Six minutes after Darren Mattocks tied the game for Vancouver at 1-1, Alvaro Saborio’s second goal of the game on a header in the 58th minute gave Real Salt Lake a 2-1 win over Whitecaps FC.

Saborio benefited by some poor Vancouver marking to earn the game winner. He scored the contests opening goal from the penalty spot in the 34th minute, after a questionable decision by referee Kevin Stott.

Both Jay DeMerit and RSL’s Kyle Beckerman played in the MLS All-Star game on Wednesday in Philadelphia. Those two collided in the Whitecaps six-yard-box in the 32nd minute and Vancouver’s captain received the yellow card.

Rookie Mattocks scored his  seventh of the season off of a lovely feed by Camilo in the 52nd minute. Less than a minute later, Jun Marques Davidson hit the post for Vancouver.

Scottish international Kenny Miller made his first appearance for the Caps in the 71st minute and fared well.

After a weak back pass by DeMerit in the 76th minute, Caps keeper Joe Cannon was awarded a red card for handling the ball outside of the 18 yard box. Cannon will miss the next game, which is August 11 at BC Place versus the same RSL squad.

Salt Lake is now within one point of Western Conference leading San Jose. Vancouver is still in third spot, eight points behind RSL.
