Combat homophobic bullying in schools: Pride Week organizers

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Pride Week organizers want more to be done to combat homophobic bullying in schools.

Their concern comes as Pride Week kicks off in Vancouver, and the rainbow flag was hoisted at city hall.

Many praise the steps Vancouver has taken to promote equality, but Pride President Tim Richards says the message needs to be brought to schools.

“People want a safe space for their children to be able to go to school and as we heard in chambers today LGBT youth have a much higher suicide rate,” he says.

Richards went on to say society must stop looking to institutions to affect change. He argues it’s up to parents and teachers to show acceptance of gays and lesbians in order for students to get the message.
