BC Lions’ Andrew Harris named CFL Top Canadian for July

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – BC Lions running back Andrew Harris has been rewarded for his great summer 2012 with the CFL Player of the Month Award for July, just a day after being named the league’s top Canadian.

The former BC Junior Football League star with the Vancouver Island Raiders ran for 55 yards and caught two touchdowns in last week’s win over the Calgary Stampeders.

The Winnipeg native is the CFL’s fourth-leading running back with 351 yards on 47 carries and owns a sparking 7.5 yards a carry so far this season. This is the first monthly award of Andrew’s career.

Harris, who joined the Lions in 2009 while still playing junior football, has made the most of his opportunities since being named the Lions go-to running back before the 2011 season. Harris wears number 33 as a tribute to a Vancouver Island Raiders teammate who died in a car crash in September 2008.

The Lions are on the road this week, visiting the Toronto Argonauts Monday at 2 p.m. Harris was used sparingly at Monday’s workouts with a case of turf toe but says he’ll be ready for the Toronto game.
