BC’s bars and pubs not seeing a boost from the Games

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Big, international sporting events usually draw large crowds out to bars and pubs for that feeling of comradery. But the early days of the London Olympics have had no effect on how many beers are served.

Mark von Schellwitz, Vice President of the Canadian Restaurant and Food Services Association, says his members haven’t seen a boost in business from the London Games.

“I wouldn’t say it’s had a great impact on bars and restaurants. However it certainly can do if there’s a specific event that Canada can do well [in],” von Schellwitz believes. “The Olympics are a double-edged sword — some businesses will lose business as a result, some may gain.”

He does say it’s still in the early days of the Games and reminds us that not all bars and restaurants have TV’s for people to watch.
