Brazil dazzles the crowd at English Bay

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Brazil lit up the sky with a dazzling display of fireworks and music at the Celebration of Light last night.

Many people in the English Bay crowd called it the best show in years. The show was called “Tropicana” and for some, it really did feel like “Carnival.”

“Fantastic! I loved the whole thing altogether!” exclaims one reveller.

How about those smiley face fireworks? “I was wondering if anybody else noticed that,” one man tells us.

“It was pretty cool. Some were oriented upside-down… but I noticed the smiley faces; those were pretty neat!” he beams.

It seems Brazil outdid last weekend’s show.

“I think Brazil did much, much better than Vietnam,” says one woman.

“Completely different. The colours were bright. It was colourful!” adds her friend.

Vancouver Police say they took away a replica handgun, a couple of knives, and bear spray from people in the crowd. There were several hundred liquor pour-outs. Three people were arrested out of a crowd estimated to be between 200,000 and 300,000.

English Bay a mess this morning

It happened again; the beach was left a disaster following last night’s crowd.

Greg Harper with CityTV was at English Bay this morning, when city workers had the task of picking all of the garbage up.

“The birds are certainly enjoying it… Workers are raking all of the garbage. They have heavy machinery out here to pick it all up,” he described.

“One jogger described what he saw this morning as ‘disgusting.’ But we’ve seen in the past that city workers have this down to a science,” he added.

“A lot of people have a hard time understanding why people litter like this,” notes Harper.

“Some people think there’s a large crowd and people see others just discarding their items so they just follow suit. But really, why should there be a mess like this?” he wonders.

The mess was cleared out within a couple of hours.

The Celebration of Light wraps up with Italy taking to the sky on Saturday.
