Crews searching for missing woman near Port Moody

PORT MOODY (NEWS1130) – Heat-seeking helicopters and over 25 searchers continue to look for a missing woman with special needs near Sasamat Lake.

Crews spent last night searching for the 21-year-old after she became separated from the group she was with yesterday afternoon. She was last seen at about 12:30 p.m. on the west side of the lake. Search crews are in the air and on the ground, looking for her.

Coquitlam search and rescue’s Dwight Yochim says the conditions are perfect for finding the missing 21-year old.

“The thing that we have going for us is the weather, it’s extremely warm, some people think that that’s a bit of a danger but it’s not. What we’re told, the theory is that individuals with her mental capacity have an extremely high survival rate for many days.”

He says they have heat seeking helicopters that are extremely effective at finding people lost in the forest.

Zhang has the mental capacity of a 10-year-old.

The friend was found last night, but Zhang hasn’t been seen since.

Last night, 18 people were searching; crews are there from all over the south coast of BC.

They say she’s very small and may have an injured ankle. There are several trails in the area; crews are also searching between the trails for her.
