BCGEU prepares for second round of job action

By

SURREY (NEWS1130) – Unionized government workers prepare for their second job action of the summer tomorrow — but this one should more symbolic than anything else.

Members of the BC Government Employees Union will walk out from six locations across the province tomorrow, but the impact of the one day strike may be hard to notice.

One labour expert says this latest job action is meant to be symbolic more than anything.

Up to 180 union members will walk off the job from ministry offices in Surrey, Kelowna, Campbell River, and 100 Mile House.

UVic Labour Relations Professor Ken Thornicroft says this isn’t about inconveniencing the public, but about making a point to government.

“These might be locations where job losses are particularly problematic”  he says. “I know that there has been some concern about professionals within the civil service losing their positions and not filling positions that are currently vacant.”

The BCGEU’s 25,000 members have been without a contract since March 31st — and haven’t seen a raise in three years.
