Summer storm lights up the sky

By

LOWER MAINLAND (NEWS1130) – The Tri-Cities appear to have been hardest hit by a summer thunderstorm that passed over the Lower Mainland overnight.

At one point in Coquitlam, around 8,000 BC Hydro customers were without power. There were a few power bumps here in the newsroom as well, with lights flickering on and off and computers shutting off.

At around 7 p.m., it really started to rain, with one caller saying “it looks like Thailand out here” after one torrential downpour. The roads were left slick and drivers were being urged to slow down.

Another caller reported five lightning bolts in a one minute span.

Chris called to say the fork lightning overhead sounded like “somebody hitting a trash can with a baseball bat.”

On Grouse Mountain, a couple hundred people were unable to get off the mountain for three hours because the Skyride was stopped until the lightning passed. Those who tried to hike down the Grouse Grind were told to head back up by crews doing their nightly sweep.

There are no confirmed injuries.
