UPDATE: Hikers found on North Shore

NORTH VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – UPDATE (1:26PM) – North Shore Rescue confirms the two men were found just after noon today. The hikers were lost but prepared to spend the night outside. Last night’s search had to be called off due to lightning.
STORY (as of 10:00AM) –
Search and rescue crews are back looking for two missing hikers around Indian Arm this morning after the pair reported getting lost yesterday afternoon.
Tim Jones with North Shore Rescue says they think hikers, who are in their 20s, are somewhere east of Mount Seymour. They had to call off their search because of the lightning that swept across the South Coast last night.
“Possibly [they] could be in the area above Theta Lake, which is in the drainage leaving Indian Arm. So, that’s where we’re going to focus our activities this morning,” explains Jones.
“One [hiker] did phone their father at one 1 p.m. before his phone died and said that they were trying to return to Mount Seymour but they felt they were lost. Then they were overdue. The father was up Mount Seymour waiting for them.”
Thankfully, the young men have some experience in the backcountry and are equipped with a tent and extra food. What they don’t have is a map, since their cell phone died.
“They went on their trip using [a] cell phone as the app for the map, and that’s not really what people should be doing. You should have a map and a proper compass and you should not be using your cell phone as your GPS,” Jones points out.
He adds search crews will look for the pair by air later today.
