Canadian Olympic medals inspire children: KidSport

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Get ready for those early morning practices, moms and dads! The success of Team Canada at the London 2012 Games may prompt your kids to want to join more organized sports.

Kids tend to learn by example, explains Pete Quevillon with KidSport BC. He says a good run at the Olympics for our athletes translates into more kids picking up a racket or ball.

“I think what we see typically, from a KidSport perspective, is after games, we generally will see a 10 to 20 per cent increase in the number of applications that we get,” he tells us.

“What we’re seeing as a result of not only these games, but certainly from 2010, is that it inspires people who see those athletes perform and want to ensure that every child has the chance to aspire and dream of being an Olympian,” he adds.

It’s not just the winning that matters; he tells us the failures, though tough to watch, teach kids valuable lessons about perseverance and always trying your best.

Soccer is already the most popular sport for kids, but it’s expected to blow up even further thanks to the Canadian women’s team’s bronze medal win this morning.
