ABBOTSFORD (NEWS1130) – Just how much do farmer markets help a community’s bottom line?

A new study shows that province-wide, the markets kick in millions of dollars to the immediate area.

Abbotsford Farm and Country Market is a major player. Manager Bruce Fatkin says the Abby market contributes close to a million dollars per year to the local economy.

“That’s taking the money that is spent at the farmer’s market and that the money that the customers spend in addition to the farmer’s market in the downtown area on a Saturday,” he says.

About 32,500 people visit the farmers’ market annually.

Fatkin adds the markets are also good for the environment, since packaging is usually kept to the minimum and the fruits and vegetables don’t have to travel as far to your table.
