Wind hampering efforts to stop grass fire in Vernon

VERNON (NEWS1130) –  Wind is hampering efforts by crews trying to stop a fast-growing grass fire in Vernon.

Fire Information Officer Kayla Pepper says it started this afternoon near the Rise golf course and development.

“The fire’s approximately 60 hectors in size and there is retardant from air tankers around 70 per cent of that fire,” she explains.

There are four air tankers and helicopters working in the area, and Pepper says they plan on having them out until the sun goes down.

She adds there are some homes in the area and there are reports that two have been evacuated.  At this point, the fire is not contained.
