Fire danger rating ‘extreme’ in some parts of BC

OKANAGAN (NEWS1130) – The BC Interior is drying out!

With more hot and sunny weather on the way, Fire Information Officer Kayla Pepper is urging campers and others in the backcountry to be careful.

“The fire danger rating throughout most of the Kamloops Fire Centre is mostly ‘high’ with pockets of ‘extreme’ around Adams Lake and south of Penticton. So, we have seen conditions start to dry out over the last week, for sure,” she tells us.

Pepper notes while campfires are not banned, there are restrictions. “Campfires have to be smaller than a half metre wide by a half metre tall.”

The fire at “The Rise” in Vernon remains 70 per cent contained. It started yesterday afternoon and quickly scorched more than 36 hectares.

The province has sent 40 firefighters to the area today to assist local crews.
