SQUAMISH (NEWS1130) – A fire in Garibaldi Provincial Park near Whistler continues to grow, but not as quickly as it had been earlier in the week.
It has consumed a 26-hectare area, which is roughly twice the size of West Vancouver’s Whytecliff Park.
“We’ve had three bucket helicopters working on it all Friday. We had a 21-person ground crew most of the day, as well,” explains Eric Meagher with BC Coastal Fire Centre.
But crews on the ground aren’t actively fighting the fire.
“The ground crew is doing preparation work. They’re building landing pads and safe access for crews once they get there,” says Meagher.
The fire is about 10 kilometres north of Squamish. No homes or hiking trails are in jeopardy.
