How do you prepare your child for school?

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – What’s more important? Shopping for school supplies or getting your child mentally prepared a new year in the classroom?  The results of a new survey suggest parents may want to get their priorities straight.

Eighty-six per cent of parents asked in a Leger Marketing survey done for Oxford Learning admit to spending more time stocking up than getting their kids to bone up for the new school year. Experts say the summer months can be a good time to make sure your child stays sharp.

“Make sure that kids are working on those academic skills, whether that be reading, writing, practicing math, working through French, whatever the case might be,” says Shaheen Fazal with Oxford Learning.

She says school may be out for summer, but learning should never take a holiday.

“It takes a couple of months just to get back into the swing of things and those kids that have actually spent time over the summer working through academics are that much more prepared for the following new year,” Fazal explains.

Two-thirds of parents surveyed did feel their kids were academically prepared for the new school year, yet just over a quarter could confirm their children had actually practiced reading and math over the summer layoff.
