Police watchdog says cop’s one day suspension isn’t enough

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – BC’s police watchdog says the one day suspension a Vancouver cop got for shoving a disabled woman is too light.

Cst. Taylor Robinson was caught on video pushing a woman with cerebral palsy to the ground on East Hastings two years ago.

“She’s happy that they’re taking her case seriously, and that this is being dealt with as a matter that really was a serious thing,” says Scott Bernstein, the victim’s lawyer.

He adds that the officer abused his authority and neglected his duty by excessive use of force.

“This is an example of the system working but again, it’s not something that happens very often so we’re happy that the OPCC is taking its role seriously in this case.”

The Police Complaint Commissioner is now stepping in to make sure Robinson gets a punishment that is more severe.

It is not known what disciplinary actions will now be sought for the officer.
