Burnaby group opposed to Kinder Morgan pipeline

By

BURNABY (NEWS1130) – Some people living in Burnaby are joining forces to oppose the planned Kinder Morgan pipeline expansion.

A few members of the group have already been impacted by the company. In 2007, some homes were damaged by Kinder Morgan’s pipeline rupture in an area of North Burnaby.

Neighbours are worried about the potential impact another leak or oil spill will have on the environment and that’s why the group BROKE is getting started. BROKE stands for Burnaby Residents Opposing Kinder Morgan Expansion.

Ruth Walmsley is a member who says she doesn’t want oil in her backyard.

“The terminus of the Kinder Morgan pipeline is right in our neighbourhood, it’s where the oil tankers come to fill, it’s where the pipeline comes, it’s right in North Burnaby,” says Walmsley.”

“(I’m) concerned about the effect that this is going to have on our neighbourhood, the eco-system of Burrard inlet in the event that it goes ahead.”

BROKE has about two dozen member but is hoping to gain more support from people in other parts of the lower mainland.

“Our goal is to do a lot of outreach in  the community, to raise public awareness about the impact of the twinning of the pipeline, (and what it would have) on our neighbourhood and city.  And there are a lot of other groups that are springing up all over the place as well,” explains Walmsley.

The group is meeting tonight at the McGill library branch to talk more about its mobilization plans.
