VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – With just a few weeks left before the kids go back to school, Canadian parents are spending hundreds of dollars to get their kids ready for the new academic year.

A new study by Visa shows that the average family will spend around $677 on back-to-school supplies, an increase over last year of about $200.

Ontario is in the top spending spot with an average of $757. Next is Alberta with $727, followed by BC with $640.

About 80 per cent of back-to-school shopping among British Columbians is expected to be made on this side of the border. Nearly a third will be done online.

Parents will be forking over cash for traditional school supplies like binders, pencil cases, and books, as well as clothing, footwear, and electronics like laptops and tablets.
