Group pushes for “happy hours” at BC restaurants

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A local group thinks it is ridiculous that “happy hour” is still technically not allowed in BC. A push is now on to lift this, but not everyone is on board.

Weekly drink specials are okay but price changes during the day are not; Elin Tayyar with the newly-formed Campaign for Culture thinks this needs to end now.

“Alberta, for example, they have price minimums. It’s not like they are giving out free liquor… you are still meeting pricing requirements. Having met that… it doesn’t make sense not to allow specials throughout the day to draw people in,” she argues.

Miles Craig with Canada’s Temperance Foundation thinks the laws are fine the way they are. “Any time there is a decrease in pricing, it results in an increase in consumption of alcohol.”

He doesn’t think people will be able to control themselves.

Statement from a spokesperson for the provincial ministry responsible:

Licensed establishments in BC can offer drink specials as long as they are in place for the entire day.

Drink specials during certain times of the day, such as Happy Hours, are not permitted given the risk they may lead to over consumption.

There are no restrictions on bars and restaurants offering food specials to draw customers into their establishment.
