VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – We already know support for the Enbridge pipeline isn’t so hot here in BC. But there’s now a poll saying that’s the case even among federal Conservative voters in this province.
Forty-one per cent of British Columbians who voted Conservative in last year’s election are opposed to the pipeline, according to the Abacus survey.
Alex Monk with the polling agency wonders how the ruling party will deal with these numbers. “The Harper government has been very supportive of the pipeline program and really pushing for increased trade with Asia. However, with such a high level of opposition in BC, the question arises, ‘Can Harper risk those seats, federally?’”
Monk adds that’s not the only surprise they found. “The difference between the general view that strong economic conditions in one area of the country will overall benefit the country. The fact that that didn’t hold true suggests to us the pipeline project hasn’t made a case that the benefits outweigh the cost.”
He says support for the pipeline is trending downwards across the country slightly, mostly just pulled down by numbers here in BC. Over one in three Canadians are still undecided about the pipeline.
Support for the pipeline was highest in Alberta (63%) while opposition was strongest here in British Columbia (56%).
