SAANICH (NEWS1130) – It’s one thing to steal something that isn’t yours. It’s quite another to steal from a police fundraiser.

That’s exactly what happened after a $200 gift basket was stolen during the Tour de Rock Cops for Cancer Fundraiser.

Staff Sgt. Scott Treble says the thief came in the recreation centre through a back door and made off with the donation.

One of the officers viewed surveillance video from the centre and says he recognized the man.

“Perhaps this can all turn into a positive if they’re able to put another basket together and get some extra funding for the ride,” Treble suggests.

Treble says the man is well-known to police and has an extensive criminal record stretching back twenty years.

This fundraiser was sponsored by the Edges on Ice hockey training program.
