VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Even with the two small fires on the North Shore and in Mission yesterday, it’s been good news for wildfire fighters around the Lower Mainland.

Normally there have been 217 fires by this time of the summer, but this year, there have only been 157 along the South Coast and Vancouver Island.

Donna MacPherson with the Coastal Fire Centre says you can’t attribute the decrease to the rain alone.

“What’s interesting this year is we’ve had more lightning fires than people fires, which is reverse for us. We’ve had 83 lightning fires and 74 person-caused fire,” explains MacPherson.

She believes campers and hikers are being a lot more careful this year.

“I think it’s more than just luck. I think people are paying attention. We’ve been trying very hard to make people understand the dangers of campfire safety and it seems to be working,” notes MacPherson. “Our thank you goes out to the public for being safe and we’re asking them to keep it up.”

And good news if you love roasting marshmallows. MacPherson says there is still no campfire ban anywhere in the Coastal Fire area.
