Politicians from all sides protest Kits coast guard closure

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – More than a hundred people joined forces to send a message to Ottawa to stop the upcoming closure of the Kits coast guard station.

Everyone from politicians to labour union reps showed up to support the coast guard.

Provincial New Democrats, Liberals and even the Green party joined together for the cause.

BC Federation of Labour President Jim Sinclair had a stern warning for the Prime Minister.

“I want to be very clear this station will not close. Period. We are not giving Stephen Harper the option,” he told the crown.

He adds he’s worried about marine workers.

“We’re not abandoning this ship and we’re not going down with it, ” he told the crowd. “The labour movement will not rest as long as they’re going to close this place. “

Back in May, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans announced it was closing the Kitsilano coast guard, leaving only the Sea Island coast guard station at YVR.

The Feds claim BC has more lifeboat stations than any other province.

The Kits station is expected to shut down at the end of the boating season.
