Teachers digging into their own pockets in the classroom

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – While your kids are enjoying their last week of summer, teachers are already inside the classroom.

With September fast approaching, some teachers are digging into their own pockets to get ready for the new school year.

They’re spending their money on things like decorations for the classroom and supplies for experiments.

President of the BC Teachers Federation Susan Lambert says teachers are spending thousands of dollars.

“I do believe that it would be significantly more than thousands of dollars and less and less support for the resources that are necessary for classrooms,” she says.

But it’s not just money for pretty stamps and stickers. Some teachers are having to buy teaching resources for your kid’s education.

Lambert says her members are facing a $100-million shortfall and a new round of bargaining, which is expected next spring.
