Milos Raonic reaches third round of US Open

FLUSHING, NY (NEWS1130) – Canadian Milos Raonic fired 30 aces as he disposed of France’s Paul-Henri Mathieu 7-5, 6-4, 7-6(4) to reach the third round of the US Open where he’ll meet American James Blake.

The hard-serving 21-year-old advanced to the third round for the first time in his career and also became the first Canadian male to do so since Martin Laurendeau in 1988. Laurendeau is the captain of Canada’s Davis Cup team, which Raonic is apart of.

Raonic performed much better than he did in his opening round match, in which he needed to rally from a set down to beat Santiago Giraldo in five sets. He earned two breaks while holding serve throughout the match.

Raonic says he knows he needs to continue making improvements as the tournament progresses.

“I feel good about it, I’m getting better. Obviously, I have now two days to get even better and I feel if I do I’ll have my chances and I’ll feel good about that.”

The 32-year-old Blake put in a convincing effort in his second round win. He beat 24th-seeded Marcel Granollers 6-1, 6-4, 6-2.
