VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The Legal Services Society agrees the legal system has to be more focused on the people who are relying on the system to resolve their problems.

The society’s Mark Benton says right now too much time is spent on the process, and not enough on the resolution.

“We know that what they want is to know what needs to happen to have it happen and get through it as quickly and fairly as possible,” he says. “To the extent that we can get people through the system faster, of course it saves significant amounts.”

The society would like to see more designated drug and domestic violence courts, and outreach workers to help people navigate through the legal system.

“We see principally that people who are suppose to benefit from the system, the public, ought to be more of a focus in the system and our approach has been let’s talk about the outcomes,” he explains. “Let’s talk about what happens in the court process and how people can get what they need faster.”

The reforms they’re recommending include an increased use of videos for such court appearances as bail hearings and more advice services for divorce and family cases.
