SURREY (NEWS1130) – Fire crews in Surrey were kept busy overnight having to put out two separate fires.

The first one happened at midnight. at an abandoned home around 184th Street and 42nd Avenue. It was hard for firefighters to douse the flames because it’s a “no water area,” meaning no hydrants, so water had to be shuttled in.

Battalion Chief Tom Morgan says over three hours later, a car was destroyed after going up in flames at the back of a home at 168th Street and 56th Avenue.

“[Crews] quickly doused the flames on the side of the house and stopped any further damage there and put the car fire out.”

Morgan says investigators will spend the day at both scenes to figure out the cause.

“It takes time to bring the people in to look at the scene. Also a lot of times, daylight is a lot better to work in than at night.”

No one was hurt in either fire and it doesn’t look like they are connected.

Busy night for Surrey RCMP

Two men are lucky they walked away from a bizarre crash at 88th Avenue near Scott Road.

Police came across a helmetless and bloodied motorcyclist lying on the road and found the bike’s passenger limping several blocks away.

RCMP Inspector Steve Wade says they are still looking into what happened, but Mounties believe speed and booze were involved.

“From what I gather, the bike probably just wiped out. There’s no indication there was a second vehicle involved at all.”

Both men have been treated for cuts and scrapes at hospital but are expected to be fine.

In total, Surrey RCMP responded to over 300 calls overnight, most of them alcohol related.
