VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The nice weather will be sticking around for a while, but if you plan on taking advantage of the sun by hitting a Vancouver beach, be careful.
Lifeguards that have been posted at beaches this summer will no longer be there after Labour Day.
So far this summer, 77 people have been pulled from local waters. Last year, that number was at 61.
Vancouver Park Board Commissioner Sarah Blyth says if you’re heading to a Vancouver pool or beach, be extra careful.
“Children under eight need to be within arms reach of adults [and] always be aware and watch your children while they’re swimming,” says Blyth.
One of the reasons lifeguards won’t stay on is because of money. With kids heading back to school, there are less people in the water and the board says it’s simply not a good use of resources.
