VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The US presidential campaign is ramping up now that Mitt Romney has officially been nominated by the Republicans and the Democratic Convention is being held this week in Charlotte.

So how does November’s election results effect us north of the border?

Political scientist Douglas Ross says the focus right now for candidates is on their own economic woes.

“I don’t think most Americans are paying attention to foreign or defence policy. They’re interested in one thing and that’s jobs, so foreign and defence policy is probably going to be very much a tertiary issue,” believes Ross.

He says he’d be very surprised if Mitt Romney pays much attention to Canada, adding it’s not a country like Iran, which Romney has promised to get tough with.

“I’m not sure candidate Romney pays any attention to us whatsoever. We don’t cause problems for the United States. Romney, I suspect, knows virtually nothing about Canadian-American relations.”

Romney has gone on record as supporting the Keystone Pipeline, the mega-project that would bring Alberta oilsands product to American refineries.

Americans will go to the polls in a little over two months on Tuesday, November 6.
