VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – There is more bad publicity for BC Ferries with the newly formed commuter group FerryHostage.com.
The people behind the site want more service and reduced fares, especially for those travelling daily from the Sunshine Coast.
Stephanie Clarke is with the newly formed commuter group. She’s been conducting surveys surrounding service and fares.
“Basically all of the ferries in the interior are free,” she says. “One of them in comparison is the same length and time as the Sunshine Coast one…so we are asking people to comment if they think this is an equitable situation.”
So far, the site has been gaining momentum over social media.
SFU marketing expert Lindsey Meredith says this is a pretty tough position for the corporation to be in.
“The real issues are that some ferry routes do not break even,” he says. “Those are the cost killers. But by the same token, if you cut services to the Sunshine Coast, to the Gulf Islands or to the Northern BC area, you are going to be gathering some pretty irate individuals.”
BC Ferries is deciding not to comment on the matter and Meredith feels more negativity would be sailing its way if it did.
“The bottom line is trying to supply the service levels the public wants at the price the public wants – up to this point- does not seem to be a very viable option,” he explains.
