PEACE ARCH (NEWS1130) – One of three accused Stanley Cup rioters evading police by hiding out in the US has been caught at the border. The 20-year-old was flagged at the Peace Arch crossing on Monday.
It was during a second examination when border agents realized American Dakota Schlag was wanted on a Canada-wide warrant for charges of participating in a riot and mischief.
There are two other suspects still south of the line. Vancouver Police Constable Brian Montague says they have reminded those men that their warrants don’t expire.
“We’ve been in contact with both of them. We’re hoping they do the right thing and turn themselves in. If they do attempt to come into Canada, they have been flagged and they will be arrested just like Mr. Schlag was.”
Montague notes that since the warrants are Canada-wide only, police here don’t have jurisdiction in the States to arrest the men who are still hiding in the States.
“We’re happy one is finally going to be able to appear in front of the courts. Like I said, we want these individuals to do the right thing and make arrangements with investigators to turn themselves in. This is not going away, it’s something they’ll have to deal with eventually,” adds Montague.
Jensen White and Nigel Li, both in their early 20s, are still south of the line.
To date, Crown Counsel has approved charges against 145 people but only a handful have been sentenced.
