KELOWNA (NEWS1130) – The family of a plane crash survivor is wondering why it is taking so long for Vincent Hannay to get the help he needs for his brain injury.

Last month, two people were killed and two others, including Hannay, were seriously hurt when their small plane crashed near Peachland.

Hannay’s uncle Rick says there is air transportation ready to take him to Vancouver General Hospital, but until now, there was no doctor available to take him on as a patient.

“His capacity to communicate and speak properly has not come back yet, but we’re hoping through proper rehabilitation he will be able to get his mental capacity back.”

Rick adds it’s taking a toll on his family.

“My sister Lynn, who is Vincent’s mother, has been sitting in a motel in Kelowna for several weeks now, and she is getting very frustrated.”

Their family is from Vancouver.

On the same day the Hannay family complained about their situation, VGH has managed to find a doctor to take him.

“We have found a physician at Vancouver General Hospital who is willing to accept the patient so now we have to wait to find an available bed, an appropriate available bed, and the patient will be able to be transferred down to VGH,” says Gavin Wilson with Vancouver Coastal Health.

He notes the transfer will happen when a bed is freed up.

“It’s not like the patient can go anywhere in the hospital and then a doctor goes to find the patient. The patient has to be in a unit specific to the care that will be required,” he explains.

But Wilson says he doesn’t know how long that process will take.
