VICTORIA (NEWS1130) – A BC Conservative Party member insists the party is united, despite recent media reports.
Eighty-five members of the party took part in a special general meeting in Victoria on Saturday.
There have been rumblings that divisions were starting to form, over the leadership of John Cummins. Recent leaked documents suggest some in the party, such as former Liberal MLA John van Dongen, are unhappy with Cummins at the helm.
But party member Al Siebring says the gathering was the most unified he’s ever seen. “The dissent is not widespread. It’s a few people trying to make trouble, Lord only knows why. When you trust the grassroots of the party, you get things done.”
He says in fact they have voted to have leadership reviews less often, which suggests people are pretty happy with the current leadership.
“If John Cummins’ leadership is in so much trouble you would think that these people would want to keep an annual review, so that if a vote for a review fails this year they could do it again next year. They said, though, they are satisfied to do it every other year.”
The party’s annual general meeting is in two weeks’ time.
