SURREY (NEWS1130) – A pedestrian is dead after being hit by a car last night in Surrey.
Shortly after 5:30 p.m., a 75-year-old woman was crossing the street mid-block on 96th Avenue, a couple of blocks from Scott Road when she was hit.
“We’re not alleging any extraordinary speed…it seems like a fairly routine driving event,” explains Surrey RCMP Inspector Dan Splinter. “The driver just didn’t see her until it was too late. She was struck by the vehicle and her head struck the windshield.”
Pavitter Johal was taken to Royal Columbian Hospital where she died from her injuries.
“One of the challenges that we faced at the scene was that she didn’t have any identification on her,” notes Splinter. “One of her relatives did come by the scene eventually and we were able to send a picture from the [officer] at the hospital to the [officer] at the scene and we were able to make a positive identification based on that.”
He adds the driver of the vehicle is cooperating with police.
“The driver of the vehicle that struck her is extremely upset and was taken to hospital themselves. It’s just a very sad situation.”
