VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Like it or not, cashiers in stores are becoming a thing of the past.

One retail expert says you better get used to this growing trend and accept that self check-outs are the way of the future.

David Ian Gray says you’re seeing fewer and fewer cashiers at big box stores and pharmacies.

Companies install the kiosks to save money on labour costs, which keep prices lower for customers, as well as help them avoid waits.

“Probably the worst aspect of any shopping experience is the line-up,” he says. “Where line-ups can really build up quickly and people are in a rush, what value add are you providing by having a human being type in the purchase and then take the payment and produce a receipt when there’s another option to do that.”

He says some customers are warming up to the tech changes aimed at getting you out the door faster – but they’re not for everyone.

“For whatever reason, either because of  a tangible speed or psychologically they just think having a human being process their order means better service, they’re not ready for the switch yet,” Gray says.

He adds soon enough we’ll be using our cell phones to pay for groceries.
