PORT MOODY (NEWS1130) – A 32-year-old man is dead after a morning shooting in Port Moody on Saturday.

Police were called to a home on Wallace Wynd, just off Clark Road around 10 a.m. When officers arrived, they found a man suffering from bullet wounds.

He was taken to hospital where he died from his injuries.

Friends tell News1130 the man was gang member Joseph Markel, who was gunned down while having breakfast, with his dad and girlfriend looking on.

Port Moody Cst. Luke van Winkel says this is not the first time police have been to this home. “We know the home, we know the person. He is well known to us.”

No suspects have been arrested.

“There is a lot of stuff going on in the Lower Mainland. No community is immune to this type of stuff,” van Winkel admits.

“Port Moody is a safe town. The citizens here are safe, but unfortunately there are a lot of people in the Lower Mainland who are involved in activities that are putting people in danger,” he adds.

News1130 spoke with a man who’s lived in what he calls a “family neighbourhood” for the past 43 years. He says it’s usually a quiet neighbourhood.

“We’ve never had anything go on here so it’s surprising, but how can you be surprised these days with things that are going on all over the place,” he tells us.

The Vancouver Police Homicide Unit is taking over the investigation.

This is Port Moody’s third homicide of 2012.
