VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – A 44 year cross-town rivalry is in danger of being brought down.

For a second straight year, there won’t be a Shrum Bowl — a fall football tradition since 1967 between the UBC Thunderbirds and the SFU Clansmen. But SFU’s Athletic Director Milt Richards says their inclusion into the American NCAA this year means their schedules no longer match up.

“But I will tell you that Simon Fraser, and myself in particular, are absolutely committed to playing UBC in every single sport they have and we’re working with them trying to work out this game,” stresses Richards.

The game is traditionally played on the Thanksgiving long weekend, by Richards says right now, scheduling trumps tradition.

“So what [UBC] wants to do, is they’d like to play in January like as kind of a Bowl game, but that’s contrary to NCAA rules. We would have to get an exception [to play then], so we’re kind of looking at that.”

SFU holds the edge in the rivalry with a record of 17-15-1.
