LIONS BAY (NEWS1130) – A small forest fire burning near Lions Bay is under control.

BC Fire Information officer Eric Meagher says they are very happy with how crews are handling the situation.

“Nothing is at risk, the fire is well above the town site, and with the resources we have, we’re pretty confident we’re going to be making progress.”

The first reports of smoke came in to the Coastal Fire Centre overnight, but the Centre’s Donna MacPherson says they weren’t able to access the area until daybreak.

“There are no homes in the area that are threatened by this fire. We want people to know that there is a major natural barrier between the fire and Lions Bay so there is good protection in there,” explains MacPherson.

You could see the smoke high in the air above the Sea to Sky highway for most of yesterday afternoon.

There are numerous hiking trails near the fire, so people were asked to stay away from the area.

At this point, Coastal Fire crews believe people caused the fire.
