SURREY (NEWS1130) – Would you be okay paying less than $2 to use the new Port Mann bridge?
There are suggestions you’ll be paying less than a toonie whenever you cross the new bridge for the first few months.
The mayor of Langley thinks it would be a step closer to solving commuting problems in the short term.Mayor Peter Fassbender thinks it’ll ease congestion but more could be done to improve transportation.
“I think it’s a step in the right direction, it’s absolutely making the trips both in and out of south of the Fraser more affordable,” he explains. “It’s not the ultimate solution to funding for transportation but it at least recognizes the needs of families and businesses that are going to be using the facility.”
He’s still pushing for regional road pricing, and he’s not the only local leader doing so.
Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts wants things to be equal for commuters all over the Lower Mainland.
“Lowering the toll is a good thing, the issue that I have is that there has to be a fair and equitable tolling policy put in place,” argues Watts.
“Having that policy across the region at a very reduced rate really makes sense. Now you’re building capacity and everybody has the opportunity to use it. We’ve seen those models and best practices all over the world and we really need towards that.”
The Ministry of Transportation is making an announcement on tolling tomorrow afternoon.
