SURREY (NEWS1130) – This afternoon, we’ll find out exactly how much you will be paying to cross the brand new Port Mann Bridge.
There’s word drivers will enjoy an introductory discount to get them used to using the new span, when eight of its 10 lanes open in December. The toll is rumoured to be less than a toonie.
But the Opposition’s transportation critic feels the lower price is just a ploy to grab more votes. Surrey-Newton MLA Harry Bains says with an election just months away, he expects the Liberals to do and say anything to hang onto power, and the discount is no exception.
“The tolling system that they put in place is not fair. It’s not equitable, especially for people who live south of the Fraser who have to cross this river to do their business and go to work,” explains Bains.
“This whole Port Mann Bridge and the tolling policy that goes along with it has been a mess right from the beginning,” he adds.
Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts has also come out against the rumoured lower toll, favouring a regional road pricing scheme instead.
