RICHMOND (NEWS1130) – An explosion and fire at a gas station at Westminster Highway and 5 Road in Richmond caused chaos on the roadways this afternoon.
Just before 4 p.m., callers to the newsroom reported a fire at the Super Save gas station.
“There’s a vehicle next to the propane pump, a camper van that’s in flames, and there were some small explosions and people trying to get out of the area,” explains one caller.
“[We] saw smoke and then all of a sudden fire and right as we passed it, the fire seemed to blow-up out onto the road,” describes another witness.
From the scene, News1130′s Kristin Woodhouse says you could see flames shooting at least seven or eight feet in the air.
“The van’s engine was on fire, so [crews] pried the hood up and put that fire out. They were actually attacking the flames through the driver’s side that was closest to the pumps. [Fire crews] were spraying the water through the van,” she explains.
Woodhouse adds the camper van was completely destroyed.
“The back end of the van is completely charred and gutted. The pump is actually melted, all the plastic is melted. They’ve had five or six trucks here working on the fire.”
There are no reports of any injuries.
