VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – It helped put Vancouver on the international music map, but the former site of Mushroom Studios will soon be history.

Terry Jacks was shocked when he heard the owners of what is now Hipposonic Studios will be relocating to a smaller space by 2014. They cite rising costs and declining bookings for the move.

“It’s unbelievable. That’s where I cut all the Poppy Family stuff, ‘Seasons in the Sun’ that’s where I recorded that. It was an amazing studio. It was…I don’t know, I just loved it back then.”

The singer-songwriter had a worldwide smash with “Seasons in the Sun” back in 1974, one of the few top 30 singles to sell more than 10 million units.

Jacks still has fond memories of the facility located at 1234 West 6th Street.

“The actual board came from California. It had a unique sound, it was all tubes. The spectrum, as far as being wide, it’s also got a lot of depth. It’s like vinyl records. They have that different sound than digital.”

Many famous names have passed through its doors, including B-T-O, Heart, Ringo Starr, Sarah McLachlan, and even a young Carly Rae Jepsen.
