VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - How will government cuts affect you? That’s what unions staging a National Day of Action are trying to get you to think about.
Here in Vancouver they’ve set up a tent and a Stephen Hart bean-bag toss at Grandview Park on Commercial Drive.
Chris Aylward of the Public Service Alliance of Canada says layoffs at the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, our local coast guard station and the borders will have an impact.
“Our food safety is at risk, our marine safety is at risk, and the integrity of our borders are certainly at risk with these cuts,” he insists.
Aylward points out the latest layoff notices were issued this past week to hundreds of civil servants who process EI and old age security payments.
“Part of those cuts included people who do payment and processing of employment insurance, Canada Pension Plan, the guaranteed income supplement and old age security,” he explains. “So it’s going to take longer for those people to get those payments.”
