VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Hoping that more innocent people aren’t accused of being “thugs.”
The chair of BC’s Multicultural Advisory Council is meeting today with the head of BC’s Gang Task Force after he believes he was unfairly targeted by them.
Mo Dhaliwal says he and some friends were roughed up by task force members in June while they were at a restaurant.
He’s meeting with Supt. John Grywinski so that this kind of misunderstanding doesn’t happen to others.
“I think there’s a big chasm that exists between the community and law enforcement right now,” notes Dhaliwal. “I don’t think [police] are doing anything to bridge that chasm. I think they’re actually widening it in places.”
“[My friends and I] could not be further from the type of people that they’re after, the type of people they’re scrutinizing,” he adds.
Dhaliwal says since he’s come forward, he’s heard from dozens of other people who have had similar experiences.
“I guess what I would like to see out of all of this is some opportunity for us to have some round table discussions and for there to be some open, transparent dialogue between the people in law enforcement and members of the community.”
Dhaliwal says he hasn’t considered any legal action, he just wants to make sure this never happens again.
