VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The last of the people still living at Vancouver’s Little Mountain social housing development are being asked to move at the end of the month and the prospect of leaving their homes is upsetting to them.
Ingrid Steenhuisen’s parents moved into the complex when they arrived in Canada back in the 1950s, and now she herself lives there with her mom. They are one of four families left on the site.
Steenhuisen believes their complex should be saved.
“There’s a lot of people in the community and beyond, that feel that there’s sufficient, historical significance for this building to be saved or at least a portion of the building, to become a community history museum,” she says.
Steenhuisen wonders why they have to move when ground-breaking on a new village for that site is still at least one year away.
“There is a minimum 18 months of further work that needs to be done with the community before a shovel can go into the ground for construction, so there is no need to be presenting eviction notices now.”
The new site will be home to shops, a canal and 4,500 people housed in medium-sized condo towers and some social housing units.
